Richard W. Pogue “Dick” is a long-running lawyer at Jones Day and is still hard at work, giving his time and talent to nonprofits and civic organizations. Now, he also calls Judson Manor home.
Dick appreciates the short commute—just 11 minutes—from Judson Manor to his office at Jones Day, where he clocks in on a daily basis at age 96. During a workweek, it’s fair to say his North Point office is home. With the exception of a 10-year term at the public relations firm Dix & Eaton as its senior advisor, Mr. Pogue has been a fixture at Jones Day since joining the firm in 1957.
With the passing of his late wife Patricia (the Welcome Wagon Lady of Shaker Heights) last year, Mr. Pogue began looking for a community with amenities that included the convenience of restaurant-quality meals on-site and engaging programs.
Above all, he sought easy access to University Circle and the downtown Cleveland stomping grounds where he has spent nearly 70 years serving clients, giving his time to civic and nonprofit boards, and volunteering his talent.
The Pogues had lived in the same home in Shaker Heights for 38 years. “I’d heard a lot about Judson Manor and knew some of the people there, and with the location it was the right fit,” he says, relating that he really didn’t look elsewhere.
His daughter, Tracy, supervised what he describes as a seamless transition that was “no problem” and “a very easy move.”
Ingrained in Community
University Circle is the front porch and “neighborhood” of Judson Manor, providing a rich cultural landscape that appeals to its residents, including Mr. Pogue. “The Art Museum and institutions are within walking distance, and the fact that Judson Manor also offers performances and programs throughout the week provides plenty of options,” he says.
Remarking on the “good food and good service,” Mr. Pogue says he doesn’t always have an opportunity to check out Judson’s events while he is engaged with projects at the firm or the nonprofits he serves. Yet the lively environment there offers a positive community feel.
Mr. Pogue is currently active in, among others, the Cleveland Ballet, Cleveland Council on World Affairs and Business Volunteers Unlimited (the latter strengthens businesses, nonprofits and communities through volunteerism).
In fact, throughout his career, Mr. Pogue has been deeply involved in Cleveland’s philanthropic community in the nonprofit and civic sectors, from serving as chairman at The Cleveland Foundation and chairing a record-breaking United Way campaign to chairing The City Club, Greater Cleveland Roundtable, and University Hospitals, among others.
Rooted in Cleveland
Mr. Pogue has enjoyed front-row and backstage seats through a number of Cleveland’s eras. He played a role in many of the city’s meaningful civic accomplishments, such as helping guide the city toward recovering in the late 1970s and early 1980s and playing an instrumental role in bringing the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to Cleveland.
During Mr. Pogue’s time at Jones Day as Managing Partner, the firm experienced significant growth and entered international markets. Specializing in antitrust and corporate takeover defense, he also practiced extensively in general corporate and litigation law and has served as arbitrator or mediator in many major commercial disputes. Over the years, he has served as director of various companies including Continental Airlines, KeyCorp and TRW.
While Mr. Pogue retired in 1994 to serve as a senior advisor at the public relations firm Dix & Eaton, he rejoined Jones Day in 2004, now serving as Senior Advisor.
His undying commitment to Cleveland now includes living in the city where, for decades, he has advocated for progress, equity, fairness, and opportunity.
Overall, of the move to the Manor, he says, “The location is excellent, the amenities are all here and it’s a very nice place to live.”
